A New Public Safety Building - A Priority for City Council

Public Safety

UPDATE:  City Council has approved $1,000,000 in improvements to the existing Fire Station to extend the life and use at least 10 more years. The following improvements suggested by Chief Painter will be done over the next several months: new flooring, paving and drainage improvements, outside vehicle/equipment storage, extend the second floor to add much needed space, improvements to equipment bays adding improved floor drainage and vehicle exhaust system, remodel and renovate the kitchen, and painting the interior and exterior of the building.

The Committee is currently working at diligently reducing the costs of Phase I of the Public Safety Building Project - A New Police Station.

The Police and Fire Department buildings have become functionally obsolete. They no longer can adequately support the essential services that these departments provide; and improved facilities are needed to allow the departments to meet the needs of a growing community. A committee has been established by the Council to oversee efforts to identify alternatives and make recommendations.

The existing Police and Fire departments have outgrown the facilities they have been working out of since the 1980’s. The Public Safety Building Review Committee (PSBRC) has been established by the City Council to coordinate a review of the options.

The Committee recommended and City Council awarded a conceptual phase design contract to the team of design and construction firms: Stantec and Cornerstone. Stantec/Cornerstone and the PSBRC have evaluated current and future needs; identified potential solutions (including evaluating different sites), completed conceptual cost estimates and continue efforts to involve the public and inform the community regarding their findings.

Stantec and City Staff has completed the three Options requested by the Committee in November. You can click on the link below to view those options:
