Once upon a time, the Friends of Homer Library (FHL) actually ran the library, back before the City of Homer became an incorporated community. Today,  FHL is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization that supports the library and provides many critical services, including all of the following:

  • The bookmobile
  • The spring and fall Book-and-Plant Sales
  • Public programs, including
    • Summer Reading Program
    • The StoryWalk®
    • The Celebration of Lifelong Learning
    • Art in the Library
    • Book boxes for schools
    • Many author readings and special events
    • Special exhibitions and displays

Bookmobile

The Bookmobile The bookmobile is the mobile outreach branch of the Homer Public Library. The Friends of Homer Library both own and operate the vehicle, which can be found in various parts of Homer during the summer. FHL is always looking for volunteers who are willing to drive or hand out books!

Book and Plant Sales

Patron browsing the book and plant sale Throughout the year, FHL collects donations of books that are in decent condition. In spring and fall, the week-long book and plant sale attracts patrons who are looking for great reads at low prices or who want to decorate their homes and yards with a convenient houseplant. Volunteers are always needed for setting up and managing the sale.

Summer Reading Program

Summer@HPL logo (2018 edition) The Summer Reading Program occurs every year, and it's not just for kids! There are usually dozens of events, including author visits, model-building challenges, hands-on activities and the end-of-summer bash. FHL plays a big role in keeping all the pieces up and running. If you enjoy organizing events, this could be for you.

Celebration of Lifelong Learning

Logo of the Celebration of Lifelong Learning Every year, we recognize a member of our community who has demonstrated a passion for ongoing personal development and a dedication to spreading the wealth of knowledge to others. The Celebration of Lifelong Learning is a chance to acknowledge how much impact the community has on the library. FHL organizes the event and encourages nominations for the awards.
